Camera question

I hope it's alright for me to ask a camera question here... Basically, I have a Nikon D40 and would like a more powerful lens than my current 55-200mm. I'm become so accustom to my Panasonic's 36-432 lens (F2.8 through the whole zoom! ;) ) even this lens seems a bit limited. And since the D40's rather limited when it comes to compatible lenses, picking one becomes quite a challenge... So here are my thoughts.

1. A teleconverter. I'm looking at a 2x one, but I could possibly get a lesser one so the light isn't dropped so much. The ones I've found, though, will work with the AF-S lenses. The only problem is I'll be limited to around F8.0 at full telephoto. I don't mind having to focus and all manually, but it would be nice to have the ability there, particularly if I'm working with brighter subjects were it'd probably still focus...

2. Another lens. I'm not looking to spend over $100; I'm just wanting something for the occasional time I need that extra bit of zoom. So far the only lenses I found in this price range that are over 300mm won't focus with my camera. I'm not sure if any other features would be missing or not.

3. Screw-on lens. Perhaps the worst idea, but still being considered. The only reason I really like this idea is because all my current lenses (for the Nikon and the Panasonic) all use 52mm filters. So not only would I be able to use it on the 55-200mm, but on the Panasonic as well. Hehe, but the quality would probably be much worse than any other options.

Oh, I should also add all three choices would end up being nearly the same price... :P So what do you guys think? I'm still leaning towards 1 simply because I won't completely loose the lens functionality and it's probably the smallest solution. I'm pretty sure I could cram a teleconverter into my current camera bag without too much of a problem... I guess I could do a whole other lens if I really wanted to, but I might have to lose the flashlight and sma Jazz ll video camera I keep in there...

EDIT: A bit of a side note, I found a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG for $19 with a "rough focus". Maybe I'll luck out and it'll be primarily a problem with the focus mechanism and nothing with the manual functionality since that's what I'd have to use anyway :P
